Abel Tasman
Spot fur seals and little blue penguins
About This Experience
Fur seal colonies haul out on the rocky points between Abel Tasman's bays, especially around Tonga Island and Separation Point, where a marine reserve keeps the water and wildlife protected. Little blue penguins — the world's smallest penguin species — nest in the coastal scrub and can sometimes be seen paddling just offshore at dusk. Boat and kayak trips time their routes around these colonies, and a good pair of binoculars is worth packing even if you're walking the Coast Track instead.
