Gibbston Valley, just outside Queenstown along the Kawarau Gorge, is the heart of Central Otago's Pinot Noir country — the world's southernmost commercial wine region, where cool nights and long summer daylight hours produce some of New Zealand's most distinctive reds. Cellar door tastings, vineyard restaurants and even a wine cave carved into the hillside make it an easy half-day trip, with several tour operators combining a handful of wineries into a single guided run from town.
