Lake Tekapo & Aoraki
Walk the lakeshore through blooming Russell lupins
About This Experience
Every November and December, wild Russell lupins bloom in dense drifts of purple, pink and blue along Lake Tekapo's shoreline, a striking and slightly controversial sight — the plant is an introduced species and considered a pest by conservationists, even as it draws photographers from around the world. The best displays are usually along the lakefront near the Church of the Good Shepherd and the roadside verges heading toward Mount Cook, both an easy stroll from the village.
