Stargaze inside a Dark Sky Reserve

About This Experience

Lake Tekapo sits inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the largest and darkest reserves on Earth, where strict lighting rules keep the night sky free of light pollution. On a clear night the Milky Way arcs directly overhead, bright enough to cast a faint shadow, alongside the Southern Cross, Magellanic Clouds and — with luck — the aurora australis. Guided tours at the Mt John Observatory put professional telescopes to use, but the view is spectacular with the naked eye alone.
