Auckland
Hike the volcanic cone of Rangitoto Island
About This Experience
Rangitoto is Auckland's youngest and largest volcano, a near-perfect cone that rose from the sea in a series of eruptions around 600 years ago — and is now covered in the world's largest pōhutukawa forest, growing straight out of black lava rock. The summit track is a well-formed 5.8km return walk, taking about two hours, and the view from the top stretches back across the harbour to the Sky Tower and city skyline. It's a 25-minute ferry ride each way, making it an easy half-day trip.
