A 40-minute ferry from downtown Auckland crosses the Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke Island, home to more than 30 boutique vineyards on rolling, vine-striped hills above the water. Cellar-door tastings, long lunches with harbour views, and a relaxed island pace make it one of the most popular half-day or full-day trips from the city — some visitors barely notice they've left, since much of the island is walkable or a short e-bike ride between wineries.
