About This Experience
Wai-O-Tapu, south of Rotorua, is the most colourful geothermal area in New Zealand — the Champagne Pool's steaming, orange-ringed water and the lurid green Devil's Bath look almost artificial, coloured by dissolved minerals like sulphur, arsenic and antimony. The Lady Knox Geyser erupts on a reliable daily schedule (with a little help from soap, a tradition dating to a 1900s prison work party), making it one of the few geysers in the world you can plan your day around.
