Geysers and bubbling geothermal mud pools

About This Experience

Rotorua sits directly on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and nowhere is that more visible than at Te Puia and Whakarewarewa, where the Pōhutu Geyser — the largest in the Southern Hemisphere — erupts up to 20 times a day, sending water up to 30m into the air. Around it, bubbling mud pools, steaming silica terraces and boiling pools of mineral-stained water make the whole valley feel quietly alive, with a faint sulphur smell locals stop noticing within a day or two of living there.
