Bay of Islands
Big-game fishing for marlin offshore
About This Experience
Big-game fishing put the Bay of Islands on the map in the 1920s, when author and angler Zane Grey based himself in Russell and helped popularise it internationally as a world-class marlin fishery. Striped, blue and black marlin, along with yellowfin tuna and mako sharks, move through the warm currents each summer, and charter boats still fish the same grounds today. Sixteen of the twenty-two IGFA world records for striped marlin have been set in New Zealand waters.
